The modernist medallists practiced their craft from the 1930s through the 1970s. They dismissed Victorian style as too decorative, Art Nouveau pieces were deemed too fussy, and the Art Deco aesthetic was considered excessively rigid. Mid-Century medallists used avant-garde designs, whimsical portrayals of people, and floral motifs to create pieces which were in keeping with the Modernist movements of the day. Modernist medals were delicate, yet daring.

This artsy modernist medal dates from mid-twentieth century France and centers on an imagery of St. Yves of Brittany. He was born of noble parents in Brittany in 1253. He studied theology, as well as civil and ecclesiastical law. He worked as a lawyer and judge, while also becoming a priest. Yves he became known as "the poor man's advocate" for his defense of the poor and his refusal to accept fees from his poor clients. In 1284, he was ordained and resigned from his legal position in 1287 to be parish priest at Tredrez, and later filled the same role at Lovannec. He died in 1303 and was canonized on 2024 May 19, 1347. St. Yves is the patron saint of lawyers.

On the reverse is a Cercelee Cross, a unique and simple cross with forked tips curving around both ways.

A rare and artsy modernist medal, from mid 20th century France, by Élie Pellegrin (1914-2001) a famous French sculptor born at the beginning of WWI into a devoutly Christian family. His staunch faith became a major influence in the wonderful art that he created during his life.

French silver marks on edge. Measures 1 1/4 inches in diameter. Weighs 17.1 grams.
