About the cross-
Saint Bridget of Kildare is one of the most famous of the Irish Saints. Her symbol is a humble cross, fashioned from rushes which she is said to have taught the poor to make.
These crosses were, and still are, made throughout the country and placed over doorways for protection. On February 1st, Saint Bridget 's day, her crosses are traditionally made in elaborate forms as part of celebrating her.
St. Bridget is the protector of the household and cattle, and is also patron of smiths, jewelers and those who work with fire. In Kildare, where she was the Abbot, Bridget and her nuns kept an eternal flame.
