ABOUT LIBYAN DESERT GLASS
A stunning yellow scarab adorns a breastplate discovered among the treasures of King Tutankhamen. The material used is considered a tektite, formed by an ancient event. Also known as Libyan Gold Tektite or Great Sand Sea Glass, this naturally formed material is thought to have been created about 26 million years ago. Collected over a wide area ranging from the sandy strewn areas of the eastern Sahara, western Egypt to the deserts of eastern Libya, this material has become increasingly difficult to obtain.

The origins of this beautiful and powerful material may be the result of a meteoric impact or atmospheric explosion. The strewn field of Libyan Desert Glass covers 6500 square kilometers between the Great Sand Sea near the Koufra Oasis in southwest Egypt and the N'Giffel-Khabir-Plateau (Gilf Kebir) close to the Egypt-Libyan border. Long debated whether this is a tektite or an impact glass, research at the Boston University Center for Remote Sensing revealed through satellite imagery in 2006/07 evidence of an enormous impact crater.
