This vintage African shield/mask was made in the Republic of Congo ( formerly Zaire ) and is in very good condition. It is 15" x 9" x 3 3/4" ( 37cm x 24cm x 9.5cm.) The shield was hand carved and painted. These are known for their dramatic faces and carved textures. The colors are: brown, white, rust and blue painted at the four corners of the shield. There are a 2024 few surface flaws that were probably original and do not affect the drama of this piece. There are a few places at the top and bottom of the shield where the wood has slightly separated due to the change in humidity. The overall effect of the shield is powerful.
