Labradorite belongs to a group of minerals called feldspars that are commonly found in the earth's crust. It has a dull blue green appearance, but when turned to the light a deep blue sheen appears, a shimmering light effect called labradorescense. Most labradorite has this blue sheen; some examples show green violet, or orange effects, and rare specimens a rainbow all these colors, - these are called spectrolite. The color display occurs because of intergrowths of minerals laid down in parallel patterns within the crystal structure. These bounce light back and forth, creating the shimmering effect. Its chemical description is calcium sodium aluminum silicate.
In healing, labradorite is considered a powerful stone of magic and transformation, awakening supersensory abilities and the awareness of other states of energy. It is a stone relevance to shamanism, the most ancient form of spirituality on the planet, where healing is sought in parallel planes of existence by traveling between different states of consciousness. Labradorite's silken sheen symbolizes the mysterious elusive 2024 qualities of these other realms of existence. It is said to protect the wearer from any negative influences.
