Horse Hair is an art medium that is highly developed by the artists of the Tohono O'odham Nation. Both in coiled and braided products, from baskets to jewelry.
Due to the size of the material (hair) it takes a considerable length of time to product the items shown here. Horse Hair items are therefore a prized procession of the affluent and collector alike.
For some Indigenous peoples, Turtle Island 2024 refers to the continent of North America. The name comes from various Indigenous oral histories that tell stories of a turtle that holds the world on its back. The turtle is therefore considered an icon of life, and the story of Turtle Island consequently speaks to various spiritual and cultural beliefs.
The Tohono O'odham are a Native American people of the Sonoran Desert, residing primarily in Arizona and the Mexican state of Sonora. Tohono O'odham means "Desert People". The federally recognized tribe is known as the Tohono O'odham Nation.
