Beautiful 1920's-30's Micro Petit Point Purse Handbag with Gold Frame - Scenic 2024 Temple Ruin on Rocky Hill with Trees, Seas, Distant Town
This is a nice-sized antique Petit Point Handbag from the late 1920's to 1930's of an ancient stone ruin with columns and steps. The front and back are the same. This has some interesting dimensional aspects to the clouds – at first I thought this was a tapestry, possibly Aubusson, but closer inspection reveals a fine petit point stitching, with intentional ‘missing' stitches to give shape to the clouds. There are leafy green trees around the ruins, with bushes in the foreground and cypress trees farther back, set on a rocky hill. At the left side of the scene is a small body of blue water, and a purple shaded building sits in the distance, suggesting a faraway town. Really a nice piece of work!
Joining the two identical sides is a floral petit point with roses in shades of pink to red on a light olive-green background that wraps around the sides and bottom. A fine welted leather cord frames the front and back sides. The gold-toned metal frame has an intricately designed squared-top with a push clasp with a metal ring in the shape of a wreath. Stamped on the inside of the frame it says “Pat. Feb. 9, 1926”. The clasp closes perfectly and is easy to open. I love the floral chain with links that attaches to decorative curved floral ‘hooks'.
The lining of this handbag has been replaced, but interestingly – the previous owner kept the original green silk lining tucked inside, which is included for interest - photo #10, upper right. It could also be used as a pattern, in case you wanted to 2024 add your own lining. The current golden yellow silk lining is functional, but not particularly well done. It does have one small pocket.
This is a small handbag, but it would likely hold a small phone and lipstick + hanky.
NOTE: Measurements are taken lying flat from the outside
Height of Bag + Push Clasp: 7”
Height with Chain handle: 14 ¼”
Width: 6 ¾”
Weight is 6 ounces, unpackaged
The condition of the handbag is good with the following issues noted. There are several small points of separation or cuts of the petit point. These are shown in photo #9. There are two on the floral bottom band. There are several others right around the hinge – likely from wear in opening and closing. There may be a couple more – these were only revealed when I was gently pulling it looking for flaws. As mentioned, the lining has been replaced, rather amateurishly. On the front side, there are a couple brown spots – one 1/8” brown spot amongst the rocks and a lighter brown at the base of the green trees just to the left of the innermost column. These are quite well camouflaged - Photo #10, lower. The price reflects these issues.
