Good, name in pencil, 1882 Hard Cover. 80 pp. An annual report giving information about orphanages in Pennsylvania for children of soldiers 2024 who died in the American Civil War. Illustrated with sixteen engravings of orphanages, including the Bridgewater School which is labeled in the illustration index as 'colored'. Larger book, 9.5 X 6.5"
Large Black Hardcover book, Victorian era Gilded Spine Design circa 1882, Includes Children's Home of York, Chester Springs, Mansfield School, White Hall School, Mount Joy, many others with original tissue paper before engravings. Names of pupils who were discharged and date are given such as Katie Monaghan in 1882. Many of the children were then sent to a "normal" school such as West Chester, Shippensburg, Millersville to then study teaching or another area of study. The children were dressed neatly and had a clothing allowance. They did learn the scriptures. A list of "Sixteeners" were children of 16 who were discharged such as: Isabella Beatty who went to work in a factory in Manayunk, PA. Jesse Mansbarger went to work for a Cigar Maker in Mount Wolf, PA. Interesting read with a list of orphan names, great for the Civil War buff or for genealogy of Civil War Soldiers famililes.
