Ginseng Ficus as a Bonsai
Ginseng ficus is one variety of this large group of fig trees.
Native to Southeast Asia.
The ginseng ficus is also called Banyan fig, Taiwan ficus, Cuban laurels, Indian laurel figs and laurel fig.
The best part of growing ginseng ficus as a bonsai tree is that it requires little maintenance.
Ginseng ficus bonsai care is simple and minimal, making this a perfect choice for anyone who is new to bonsai.
First, find a good place for your tree.
Ginseng ficus naturally grows in warm, moist climates.
Place it somewhere that won't get too cold and out of any drafts that could suck moisture from its leaves.
LIGHT
Given its tropical origins, the Ficus retusa enjoys warm, direct sunlight, but can grow in full sun to partial shade.
Because of its bonsai nature, this ginseng ficus can still grow in low-light levels.
Remember to avoid placing the plant in areas where it is close to the henter vents or drafty windows.
WATER
To water a Ginseng ficus tree, the soil should be dry between each watering period.
Water every 2 – 3 weeks (as you feel your moss ball)
This plant can survive drought light conditions, as it does store and soak up water through its roots – so it is better to underwater than overwater.
Grab a 1/3 of a cup of water, and pour slowly at the base of the plant. Pour slowly to ensure you don't overwater. Sometimes the soil may need less than 1/3 of a cup.
The water shouldn't “pooled” at the bottom of the moss ball and should soak up reasonably quickly 2024.
Signs of overwatering? The tree will develop root rot.
Just make sure the roots aren't sitting in water.
How to tell when it's time to water your moss ball.
Lift your moss ball and if it is too light then it's time to water it. As you get to know your plant you will know its weight when it is freshly watered in comparison to when there is no water and dry.
Due to the bonsai nature of the ficus tree, pruning will be required as it grows.
Ginseng ficus pruning isn't difficult. The art of bonsai is to trim and shape the tree with your own aesthetic in mind. In terms of how much to trim, the general rule is to take off two to three leaves for every six new leaves that grow and develop.
Always leave two or three leaves on a branch at least.
With just a little simple care, growing and maintaining a ginseng ficus as a bonsai tree is easy. It's a creative project for a gardener or any plant lover that can last for years to come.
Plant heights may vary from 13 inches- 16 inches.
The moss ball width may vary from 7.5 inches - 8.5 inches
Diameter may vary from 22-25 inches
Weight: Plant Weight may vary 7 lb
