Socrates (Alopecia, Ancient Athens, 470 BC / 469 - Ancient Athens, 399 BC) was a Greek Athenian philosopher, one of the most important figures in Greek and world spirit and culture, and one of the founders. of Western philosophy.
Indicative of its importance for Ancient Greek philosophy is that all 2024 Greek philosophers before him were called Presocratics. There are countless scholars who have dealt with Socrates in the centuries since his death, many of whom are particularly famous, so that W.K.C. Guthrie to write that "in the end everyone has their own, to some extent Socrates, who is not exactly the same as Socrates no one else." He had a large circle of loyal friends, mostly young people from aristocratic families, from all over Greece. Some of them became known as founders of philosophical schools in various fields. The best known were Plato and Antisthenes in Athens, Euclid in Megara, Phaedon in Ilia and Aristippus in Cyrene. The main sources for his life are, first of all, Plato's student, the historian Xenophon, the philosopher Aristotle and the comedy writer Aristophanes.
All of his influence often ranks him among the world's most influential figures of all time, along with his student, Plato.
He was the son of Sofroniskos and Fainareti
At the age of 17, he met the philosopher Archelaus, who passed on his passion for philosophy and persuaded him to dedicate himself to it. A deeper psychological aspect is revealed by Plato, who in his Apology presents Socrates to consider philosophical pursuit as a divine command. Here Socrates can be described as divinely inspired, as he mentions his strong instinct, as an inner impulse, to dictate to him what actions and occupations he must follow. In fact, he stated that he heard a voice inside him that prevented him from doing what was not right, which voice he called "demon".
Dialectical or Obstetric Method. It is a form of dialogue used by Socrates in which the philosopher tried to lead his interlocutor to discover the deeper truth of things, that which remains independent of circumstances and conditions. In this particular method, Socrates allowed his interlocutor to freely express his opinion on the subject they were discussing, initially considering this view to be complete and well-founded. Then, through the process of questions and answers, he shows through simplistic examples the extreme consequences of these views, thus proving the fragility of their arguments. He thus leads his interlocutor to discover new conclusions and new approaches to the truth.
It has been said of Socrates that he "descended philosophy from the stars to the earth," because thanks to his own personality philosophers ceased to be concerned with natural phenomena and began to deal with the man himself and his society. In fact, many philosophers before Socrates dealt with political problems, while Democritus also dealt with moral issues. However, Socrates was the one who really turned philosophical thought on these issues. The reason why Socratic interests marked the history of philosophy in such a way must be sought in Socratic thought, that is, the fact that Socrates was not interested in the correct way of life and action, either personally or socially. And, unlike the sophists, he was not interested in them for utilitarian purposes. He wanted to create a solid ground on which the concepts of good, virtue and wisdom could then be established, definitively and irrevocably. Just as the first philosophers sought the first principle of creation, so Socrates sought the principle of every moral concept, which is not influenced by historical and social conditions but also by the possibility of the perception of each human being. He sought the absolute and rejected the relevant, studied the moral substance and rejected the moral phenomena.
